Green light drives leaf photosynthesis more efficiently than red light in strong white light: revisiting the enigmatic question of why leaves are green.

چکیده
The literature and our present examinations indicate that the intra-leaf light absorption profile is in most cases steeper than the photosynthetic capacity profile. In strong white light, therefore, the quantum yield of photosynthesis would be lower in the upper chloroplasts, located near the illuminated surface, than that in the lower chloroplasts. Because green light can penetrate further into the leaf than red or blue light, in strong white light, any additional green light absorbed by the lower chloroplasts would increase leaf photosynthesis to a greater extent than would additional red or blue light. Based on the assessment of effects of the additional monochromatic light on leaf photosynthesis, we developed the differential quantum yield method that quantifies efficiency of any monochromatic light in white light. Application of this method to sunflower leaves clearly showed that, in moderate to strong white light, green light drove photosynthesis more effectively than red light. The green leaf should have a considerable volume of chloroplasts to accommodate the inefficient carboxylation enzyme, Rubisco, and deliver appropriate light to all the chloroplasts. By using chlorophylls that absorb green light weakly, modifying mesophyll structure and adjusting the Rubisco/chlorophyll ratio, the leaf appears to satisfy two somewhat conflicting requirements: to increase the absorptance of photosynthetically active radiation, and to drive photosynthesis efficiently in all the chloroplasts. We also discuss some serious problems that are caused by neglecting these intra-leaf profiles when estimating whole leaf electron transport rates and assessing photoinhibition by fluorescence techniques.

Light sheet microscopy reveals more gradual light attenuation in light-green versus dark-green soybean leaves
Light wavelengths preferentially absorbed by chlorophyll (chl) often display steep absorption gradients. This over-saturates photosynthesis in upper chloroplasts and deprives lower chloroplasts of blue and red light. Reducing chl content could create a more even leaf light distribution and thereby increase leaf light-use efficiency and overall canopy photosynthesis. This was tested on soybean c...
متن کاملSupport for a photoprotective function of winter leaf reddening in nitrogen-deficient individuals of Lonicera japonica.
Plants growing in high-light environments during winter often exhibit leaf reddening due to synthesis of anthocyanin pigments, which are thought to alleviate photooxidative stress associated with low-temperature photoinhibition through light attenuation and/or antioxidant activity. Seasonal high-light stress can be further exacerbated by a limited photosynthetic capacity, such as nitrogen-defic...
متن کاملGreen-light supplementation for enhanced lettuce growth under red- and blue-light-emitting diodes.
Plants will be an important component of future long-term space missions. Lighting systems for growing plants will need to be lightweight, reliable, and durable, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have these characteristics. Previous studies demonstrated that the combination of red and blue light was an effective light source for several crops. Yet the appearance of plants under red and blue ligh...

An experiment was conducted as split plot based on the randomized complete blocks design, in greenhouse complex of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz in 2017. The main plot consisted of light treatment at two levels [a) sunlight (control), b) sunlight + red and blue LEDs (50:50%) with light intensity of 70 μmol/m2s for 15 hours (from 5 PM to 8 AM as night light] and the subplot was six greenhou...

Studying broiler preference to feed color is important for improving comfort and welfare of broilers and it may be beneficial for improving performance. The aim of the first experiment was to examine day-old chick's preference in different light colors to different feed colors. One hundred and sixty Ross 308 newly hatched broilers, never exposed to feed, were allocated into pens illuminated ...
